India has taken a significant step toward becoming a self-reliant naval power with the commissioning of INS Taragiri (F41), the latest and most advanced stealth frigate in the Indian Navy. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL) in Mumbai and designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau, this fourth platform of the Nilgiri class under Project 17A represents a generational leap over earlier naval designs. The vessel features several advanced stealth capabilities and has a displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes, designed for multi-role operations. Notably, the previous Taragiri was a Leander-class ship built in the late 1970s and commissioned on May 16, 1980. The new INS Taragiri was constructed in significantly reduced timelines, showcasing India's shipbuilding prowess and strong public-private collaboration in the defense sector.
