ESA Launches First Celeste Satellites to Test Complementary LEO Navigation Layer
The European Space Agency has launched the first two Celeste satellites from New Zealand to demonstrate a complementary low-Earth-orbit navigation layer for Galileo, with the UK as an ESA member state set to benefit from the forthcoming operational PNT constellation.
Key Points
- ESA launched first two Celeste satellites from New Zealand on March 28
- Mission to test complementary LEO navigation layer for Galileo system
- UK as ESA member state will benefit from future operational PNT constellation
- Next nine satellites planned for launch by end of 2027
Full Details
The European Space Agency has successfully launched the first two satellites of the Celeste in-orbit demonstration mission from New Zealand aboard a Rocket Lab Electron launcher on March 28, 2026. The two satellites, named IOD-1 and IOD-2, are designed to assess the benefits of a complementary low Earth orbit (LEO) layer for the existing Galileo navigation system. The mission will validate core technologies and new signals, bringing into use the required L- and S-band frequencies for the mission's operational phase. The final goal of Celeste is to pave the way for a fully operational Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) constellation in LEO from 2030 onward. The next set of nine satellites is planned to be launched by the end of 2027 and will be injected into a quasi-polar orbit at 560 kilometers. As an ESA member state, the UK stands to benefit from this European navigation infrastructure development.
Why It Matters
The Celeste mission represents a significant step forward in European navigation capabilities, and UK involvement through ESA membership ensures the country will have access to enhanced positioning, navigation, and timing services from 2030 onward.
